Samantha Womack reveals she added VODKA to her water while on stage in The Girl On The Train ‘to keep things fresh’ as she portrays alcoholic lead character

Samantha Womack has revealed she once put vodka into her on stage drink while performing in the play of The Girl On The Train. 

The actress, 46, stars as the lead character Rachel, an alcoholic who believes she witnesses a crime when looking in the window of a house while on a train.

Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine, Samantha admitted she did try putting real vodka into her drink during one of her performances but it left her feeling ‘slightly unhinged’.

She said: ‘I try all sorts of things, when you’re doing a long play, we’ve extended this tour twice we’re in west end until Saturday and then were on the road til November.

‘There was one time I put vodka in the water but I felt slightly unhinged. Unless it’s to do things I enjoy, to keeps things fresh so it’s not boring…’ 

As she plays the lead character, Samantha is on stage for the duration of the play but said she enjoys the ‘momentum’ of the show.   

She said: ‘There’s just a pee break halfway through because I’m necking vodka, not actually vodka its water, yea like a ten minute break and just back on. The momentum and energy keeps you going.’

The former EastEnders star also has her daughter Lily with her during her performances who she said provides a ‘grounding’ influence.

She said: ‘I’ve got Lily, I home school she’s 14 and she’s in the dressing room most of the time. 

‘You know the truth if it is in the midst of the stage she’ll be saying do you want this vegan salad and I’m in the middle of the play. it’s very grounding, very helpful.’

Samantha has been taken good care of herself during her run as Rachel as she doesn’t want the character’s dark characteristics to affect her. 

She said: ‘I’m looking after myself a lot more, yes it just so happens to be more careful to look after my brain and body because she’s quite damaged and you don’t want that to affect you.’

Samantha is known to TV audiences for her role as Ronnie Mitchell on EastEnders, a job she described as one of the most difficult of her career.

She said: ‘It’s one of the hardest jobs I’ve ever done, there’s nowhere to hide in soap, you get dialogue pretty quickly no rehearsal and you’re immediately on stage. you don’t get more than three or four takes.’

Having left the soap in 2011, Samantha admitted she still can’t watch it as a fan.

She said: ‘I can’t, it’s too familiar I know everyone and I know the set so well so it’s too hard.’
