Petra Ecclestone has credited her three children for ‘pushing her through’ her divorce from ex-husband James Stunt.

The Formula One heiress, 29, finally reached a divorce settlement in October, after six years of marriage, and has now spoken about her split from James in an interview with Hello! magazine

Reflecting on how she ‘coped’ with the divorce, Petra admitted: ‘I think it was the kids. I didn’t have the option of lying in bed, being depressed and feeling sorry for myself.’

Petra shares three children with ex James; daughter Lavinia, five, and twin boys Andrew and James, three.

She credited her brood for distracting her from the very public split, adding: ‘I had to wake up for them. They kind of pushed me through it.’

Petra and 36-year-old billionaire James were granted a quick divorce after a five minute hearing last year. It came six years after they tied the knot in a £12million ceremony held in a castle in Italy.

While no details of the divorce settlement were released, it was reported that James signed a £16million prenuptial agreement, with Petra – who is set to launch a specialist centre, Petra’s Place, in Fulham to help children with autism later this week – awarded sole custody of the couple’s three children in January.

Speaking highly of her children, Petra added in her latest interview that Lavinia, Andrew and James are very grounded – with the socialite making sure to teach her kids that ‘love is more important than wealth’.

She claims that from an early age she learned ‘people are greedy’ when it comes to money and her father, Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone, 87, told her ‘not to trust people’.

Petra – who said she wants at least two more children and is considering adopting -also spoke of her new romance with boyfriend Sam Palmer and admitted finding love again has been ‘totally unexpected’.

She and Sam first began dating late last year – he is a friend of her sister Tamara Ecclestone’s husband Jay Rutland.

Petra confessed that she thought she would be ‘single for the rest of her life’ following her divorce, but has ‘luckily found someone amazing’.

She previously told Mail On Sunday’s YOU magazine of her new relationship: ‘It’s very early-on dating.’

‘The whole thing is quite strange because my life didn’t pan out the way I expected it to. I thought I wasn’t the type who believed in divorce.

‘I go to church and I got married thinking I would be with that person for the rest of my life. But things happen for a reason and, whatever that reason is, I’ve now got my three kids.’
