They’ve both rocketed to fame after starring on the hit 2018 series of Love Island.

But Zara McDermott and Adam Collard spoke about the downside of their success during a candid interview on ITV’s Lorraine on Wednesday about online abuse.

Speaking to the show’s summer host Christine Bleakley, Zara slammed trolls who have suggested she get a boob job, while her boyfriend Adam spoke out on his friendship with Love Island 2016 contestant Sophie Gradon, who took her own life in June.

Government adviser Zara, 20, was emotional as she told Christine she’s found dealing with online abuse tough in the weeks since leaving the Love Island villa.

‘I think, in Love Island, it’s an overnight fame you find. This is like you are catapulted into this world where all of a sudden people feel they have the right to comment negatively on everything you do, just because you are in the public eye.’

‘I don’t think it’s the comments that are so tough for me because I understand people have opinions. But it’s actually the fact I can’t empathise with someone else who chooses to comment negatively on my appearance because I would never do it to anyone else. I can’t understand why anyone would do it.’

Zara went on to say that she is particularly hurt by people commenting she needs a boob job, pointing out: ‘I’m finding it so difficult not to defend myself against things. I’ve not had surgery. I’m not going to allow someone to cast that judgement on me when it’s not true.’

Talking about being bullied at school, she added: ‘Back then I was so shy and insecure. People used to shout comments at me really nasty things when I was walking round. I would almost curl up into a ball and just not respond.’

‘Now I feel like I am strong enough and confident enough to stand up to these people, because I’m just not having it.

‘The main message I would want to send to trolls and stuff, is remember what you are putting out there. If I’m an employer and I’m looking up a girl’s Instagram handle or a guy’s Instagram handle, I can see on Google all the negative comments they’ve made. Why would I then want to employ them?’

Adam added that he took a different approach to the trolls, explaining: ‘I try not to look at them as much. I try not to get involved. I’m very sarcastic. And I think almost ‘kill them with kindness’. The people who are commenting are usually insecure.

‘I think some of the people that are commenting would probably regret some of the things they say the instant they are sent.’

Talking about how trolls’ comments had affected his friend, former Love Island contestant Sophie Gradon, who recently took her own life, he added: ‘She was in my friendship group as well. When I knew Sophie, she was one of the strongest girls I knew. It proves it can get to anyone and people need to really think.’

Adam also shared a photo of himself as a child on the show, as he spoke about his own experiences of bullying at school. He said: ‘I was quite overweight, all the way up to 16. But I could come home and get away from it then. But when it’s on Instagram and Twitter, you can’t really get away from it.

‘Just because we have a blue tick, we are not a punch bag to all these comments.’
